We have a temporary summer student who is with us for the next two months. I walked by her cubicle today and noticed 5 framed photographs, pretty colored candles and a few nick knacks.
She is only here for two months, does she really need the photo frames.
I walked through the rest of the floor and noticed that everyone has at least three photo frames with children/partners/pets.
Am I the only person who doesn’t feel the need to decorate my office as if it were my second home?

And do my six pairs of shoes count as too much personal stuff at the office?

I have so many shoes in my office. I refuse to decorate my cube. I hate people who try to turn it into a mini home. It is a cube.
I have absolutely no personal items at any of my desks.
You keep shoes at your office? lol
Hmm, lemme see if I get this straight. You left Trinidad and Dubai to go to work in a box? All that space traded in for 4 styrotex walls?
Something wrong there, but still, if its YOUR box, make it your own. Be individual, be creative, get the HR dept to personalise it for you.
Oh, you are the HR dept....
6 pairs are too many. Keep them in your car.
don't put up pictures. That way when u want to cut out, no big moving production. And aren't u afraid somebody will take up ur shoes and obeah you?
Ok, First off I take the subway into work and so I wear comfy shoes to travel and my hot shoes for work, and you need six, at least, one for every fabulous outfit.
Jum: I never lived In Trinidad, just dated one....who tried to give me an ulcer...
LOL...Yeah, I've started taking my pairs of shoes home one by one; I'm down to 3 now. I don't have pictures up in my cube. Only a Far Side birthday card I got from one of my coworkers and a sorority figurine (because it just didn't fit in at home).
But I DO have an extra outfit in one of my drawers, just in case I decide spontaneously to stay in the city one night. Hehe. I also have a mini pantry drawer and a mini cosmetics drawer for my toothbrush, feminine stuff, deodorant, etc.
So in a nutshell, I have a lot of shite at work, but you just can't see it. LOL.
You can frame my picture if you'd like.
Does it make sense that I have two jars worth of the pens we use at work at my house? And I don't even know how they got there?
**STEEUUUUUPPPPPSSSSSSS**
I see absolutely no need to kill me with the family photos at work! If the cube is really drab a few odds and ends maybe.. but the whole family album? PUKE.
I suppose there is that sweet concept that they inspire u.. the people u are here slaving for.. but on the other hand.. there was a chick in my office whose 'boyfriend' photo changed so often I dunno why she bothered AND she was always hiding them when other men came by.. and then they are the creepy men who hit on u with the pix of their wife and kids smiling out behind their cheating asses..
..ok, somebody is cranky this morning! i left one of my fave pairs of shoes in my office in Jamaica... stttteeeeeeuuupppssss!
Six is a very acceptable number of shoes to keep in your office. I have 8 black pairs alone.
LOL!!! What a funny post with great comments!!!
Someone should do a documentary on the cubicle decor. Think it would be hilarious.
The summer after 9/11, I temped in a corporate bank. I can’t tell you how many flags, and bald eagles biting Bin Laden's head off, I saw, not to mention artificial flowers, dried flowers, balloons, teddy bears, whole family albums, miniature sweet dispensing machines, cards...you name it. It was like each person was trying to outdo the other.
No shoes but 3x pairs of gym clothes at my old work..I am still moving all my shite from there even after I left 3 weeks ago.. I know there are 2 pairs of underwear (my fave 1950'w styled leopard skin velvet knickers) in a box under my gym clothes.. I only hope no-one goes fishing around in the box before I can get them home..
No, shoes live in the car, not in the office!
I have no photos in my office, but have personalised it with postcards of beautiful places i want to go to - so i can stare at them when I get annoyed here and dream of better places!
i have a few things now but my office was barren for years. Actually i prefer it barren. Its not home after all and I dont want it to feel like it is
What's in my cubicle?...6 calendars to block out the "neighbours" 2 pen holders a clock and a trophy for some tournament I played years ago. Anything here can stay here when I go. If they say leave today then I say bye-bye!!
6 pairs ? That's a lot.I kept nothing personal on my desk but then I didn't really have a desk:)
how come u haven't updated?
what did u do? run away with that fancy young man you kissed last weekend?
I only have shoes cuz I keep wearing heels that hurt like a bitch by the end of the day but I do have 2 nerf [brand] swords that I like to randomly beat people with or challenge them to a duel with. It gets out my frustrations and they always think I'll hit them really soft cuz it's nerf and that = fun right? wrong! I get in a good smack upside their heads before they decide they don't wanna play anymore. Some people have even attempted to duel me more than once...suckas! LOL
i have to admit that I'm a corporate tool. I put things up like awards and noted accomplishments. But as far as pictures or personal nick-nacks, nah. Save that for the cat lady.
Holla
GC: Girl thanks for the concern....do see new blog for your answer!
Nah, I'm not one of those who keeps personal stuff at office. I like to think that if they decide to fire my ass, I can just grab my car keys and go. No fuss.
So the only personal item in my office is my radio, pencil sharpener and dictionary, sanitisers and wipes. Maybe if I had hussy and chillun I'd have one pic. Oh and a sweater since office is always freezing.
My car is a different matter now. That's second home. Up to 5 pairs of shoes, tennis racquet and balls, telephone directory, utility bills, and much more.
