I just got my first Hydro Bill, and I am in a state of shock.

How could I have possible used $280 worth of electricity in three months in a 650 sq foot condo??

And why am I paying for the old electric companies’ debt?
Oh Gosh I am going to turn into my father soon, turning off lights, yelling at people to wear socks and sweaters in the house.

Picture poor Cranky sitting in the dark……scared of her next Hydro Bill

welcome to home ownership.

would it kill you to turn off the lights in the rooms you're not in or when you're not home. sheesh!

LOL! Energy bills are expensive! You just have to try to conserve as much as possible.

Thats a big power bill for a small place.. what are you running over there?

The hydro rates are less than 1/2 what we pay out here in backward ass Jamaica.. spend a few months out here and you would learn to conserve :(

LMAO...is this what they mean by poetic justice...or is this just plain ol' irony?

When my dad was staying with me a few months ago, I'd come home at 9 o'clock to a pitch black house and him watching TV. I had to sit him down and tell him that turning on the light is ok. LOL.

does your home heating run on electricity?

A couple suggestions:

- Unplug some of your not in use electronics
- Hang dry your clothes instead of using the dryer
- Hand-wash your dishes
- Turn the heat or A/C down when you're not home.

Another thought is that the hydro companies don't usually charge you for your actual consumption. They usually take an average and spread it out. That way your bill is relatively the same month-to-month so that you don't get slapped with a huge bill during a cold month in the winter.

So it is possible that you haven't consumed as much as they have charged you for. But I would call them to find out if this is in fact the case.

Maybe you're paying for part of the old owner's last bill?

That sounds like a rip-off -- dispute it.
