The In Crowd

On the subway this morning I was privy or nosily listening to the following conversation:

Cool Girl 1: Omigod did you see what that person wrote on my facebook wall yesterday? What a bitch. Talk about mean, is it my fault that I’ve had a few boyfriends?

Cool Girl 2: Well someone left a msg on my wall saying there is no need to wear three different eye shadows at once, and clothing is not optional. The nerve, every cosmetician knows that three colors are a must and sue me, I love being naked..”

Not so Cool Girl 1 & 2: Eagerly listening to the conversation, as luck would have it the crowded subway has pushed them all together, careful conversation and a well timed line of agreement is going to get them into this conversation…..

Cool Girl 1: Well I love your make up and I love you

Token Gay Guy friend: They are all just jealous, I love you for being slutty and I love you for wearing too much eye make up…
Not So Cool Girl 1: (piping in) We all love you….

Not So Cool Girl 2: Nods Vigorously in agreement

Cool Girl 1: As if hearing a voice from heaven looks around, and then looks at Not So Cool Girl 1, and says, “Thanks, But I don’t even know your name, (To Cool Girl 2) Do you know her name?

Not So Cool Girl 1: That’s okay, my name is XXX, we actually have three classes together…but you may not recognize me, I’ve put on a lot of weight since like grade school….

Cool Girl 1: Oh God Girl, don’t you dare say your fat, your beautiful, you just need a bit more make up and wohooo…..

Cool Girl 2: I could teach you a thing or two….

Not So Cool Girl 1 & 2: Omigod would you????

Not So Cool Girl 2: (Rather earnestly) My grandmother tries to make me eat all the time, but I refuse…..

Suddenly we are at Bloor, and boom the two groups are separated….The cool girls retreat to prime seats, whilst the Not So Cool girls are relegated to the back of the train, wistfully looking on, wondering how long it will take for the Cool girls to forget their newly learnt names…

Omigod... that's like... so... American!

Sheesh.... do kids really talk like a fart in the wind?

i just saw my 18 year-old niece over the weekend and kids do talk like that. Kinda sad.

On a lighter note, I really wish I could be close to a conversation like that... i would probably walk up and give my two cents.

Peace.

Check out overheard in NY for similar surveillance. There's a link on my blog.

American teens are so amazingly vapid.

American teens are so amazingly vapid.

I just visited your blog Leon. Vapid should be a level that you aspire to reach.

Seriously, what's with the amazingly vapid generalization?

Sounds like you ticked off an "amazingly vapid teen" Leon!

Hey now, what's with all the controversy, this section is for comments about what I wrote, not picking on other people's comments....everyone has a right to their own opinion.....

hey lay off the leon bashing american teens are vapid

I love subway conversations. i should post about the rude girl convo i heard on the way to kennedy. what was really interesting about it was the two girls were ghanian and kept switching back and forth to their native language. it was fascinating, couldnt understand half of it but they had the rude girl mannerisms down cold

Yes, because teenagers in other countries are all having discussion about quantum physics. Just the other day I was on a bus in Port of Spain listening to two 15 year olds discussing the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrography for measuring defects in silicon wafers for their nobel prize winning research.

Teens everywhere are equally vapid. And Crankyputz, don't be scared of someone criticizing one of your commenters for making a blanket statement generalizing an entire nationality. (or continent)

Chris from cynical-c.com (there's no place in the comment section to put my url)

Chris, Leon's blog is very interesting...

So yes take offense to the generalzation, but critizing his blog is a smidge mean....and not what we do here, we take the comment to task, not the person....

Play Nice Chris...the last line on your comment is not nice...and we don't give people the finger on this blog...esp the blog writer....

Chris, Leon's blog is very interesting...

And perhaps one day someone will actually read it. (I read a post from his blog, "interesting" is not the word I would use but to each their own)

Taking the comment to task but not the person? I had no idea that comments just kind of wrote themselves, totally detached from any sentient being. Thanks Putz, I learned something today after all.

Ahh Chrissy,
Im going to put this down to you having a bad day...or maybe you were personally elected to speak on behalf of all North American teens and thus have a right to take things so personally...either way.....

very interesting all this comment warring. . .
some people just want attention--
that's why I use my delete button judiciously, or sometimes copiously, on some people sometimes.
furthermore, if one wanted to link to a website, one could use html
like this

btw that links to a wonderful article on how to have good etiquette when commenting on someone's blog

Sigh.

Cranky, my point was that Leon ignorantly made a broad generalization. If someone had made a generalization about another group (pick a group, blacks, jews, whites, indians, europeans, african, whatever) and applied some sort of complete generalization, then they should be made aware of their error.

Chris your right. We are giving you a hard time, your point is valid, its just that a lot of us like Leon and his blog, his adjective was funny, I confess to having had to look it up...it is now my word of the day….I’ve been walking around calling everyone vapid…..

I am not a fan of generalizations myself...but really this new generation seems to be a bit dorkier than its predecessors....

Either way we love em all…
