I was invited to a friend from work’s new born baby’s dedication party.

Unfamiliar with the concept of a dedication party, my Roman Catholic mind linked it to a christening.

We Indian people take Christenings seriously. They are usually characterized by the hundred or so guest invited, gifts of gold, and open bars. Grand, fabulous affairs. We Catholics we do it big, (ever wonder where your Sunday collections go to? Check out the Vatican’s gold gilded walls.)

Fabulous I thought, this is a perfect venue for my new BCG stilettos and the pretty silk dress I had picked up.

Walking into the party fashionably late, I was soon alarmed. It turn out a dedication party is equivalent to a party in the hood. Capri pants, crops tops and crazy hair is all the rage. Silky dresses and clutch purses, not so much.

It didn’t help that all evening my similarly draped friend kept referring to my outfit as the Oscar ensemble.

Needless to say we were the center of attention all night. Turns out hood boyz luve little Oscar tings.

Just so you know: this is the reason a girl always asks another girl attending an event, “What are you going to wear?”

and for company in (the eventual) wrong choice of clothing...or a place to lay blame :-D

That sort of thing apparently is always a surprise
when my friend did it for her little pookie (not Roman Catholic) we had to wear our finest. There was no after party though--just a church do with pics and a prayer.

Poor you. Well, seems you need to use that idea of asking what your friend is wearing is a good idea. At least if you are both wrong you still won't be alone. lol

heh. that happened to my parents at a wedding this summer. they went in their finery, and the groom wore cargos, the bride? a summer dress with flip flops. the guests were all similarly attired. no one sent my parents the memo.

These ppl should make it a point of theer duty to tell guests the dress code for these things, cause nowadays, you never know...

the wedding one was funny, lol. but if the other guests were dressed casually too then its just the parents who missed the memo...my wedding will be similar sans flip flops cus i wanna get married on the beach...
