Last Night Toronto had a storm.

The sky got grey and fierce and the rain poured down. People’s basements got flooded.

People got stranded in the streets with out an umbrella and were forced to seek shelter under pitiful shop drafters.

While Toronto got drenched, I was reveling in the end of visitor season. I cleaned, I mopped, I cooked. I googled a recipe for Chicken in Spanish rice, which was easy enough, until I mistakenly added curry instead of turmeric powder and ended up with Chicken in Curry rice. Luckily it worked out and was delicious, thank you for asking.

I then did what you’re supposed to do on a rainy night, I watched two movies, courtesy of http://www.zip.ca/ a wonderful DVD service where they send you DVD’s via post. Not only is it quick and efficient, but finally I’m getting something in the mail other than bills and junk mail.

I watched Everything is Illuminated a story about an eccentric young Jewish guy who travels to the Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfathers life, and is driven around by young man who loves to use the most intricate engligh words to express the simplest things.

The second movie was called 2046, it’s a Chinese/Japanese movie in which the narrator scarred from an earlier romance, is seen with a different woman each Christmas, unable to lend his heart to any. He pens a book about a the year 2046 in which you can live in the memory of the happiest time of your life. The movie is filled with melancholy and nostalgia. The one scene that got me was when the narrator is getting dressed and in the back ground the a Christmas song “Chessnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” and he has no one to spend the holiday with. What is it about Christmas time that makes us need companionship? Is it a need created by the retail industry, or is there something magical about that season that makes us want to reach out to our love ones and let ourselves be loved?

I’ll leave you with a few quotes from the movie:

In love you can't bring on a substitute.

Love is all a matter of timing. It's no good meeting the right person too soon or too late.

All Memories are traces of tears

unfortunately you are missing the letter "p" up there and I was beginning to think you were disappointed your visitor had left. Now I realize you were cleaning your floors. Bon voyage to your snoring friend and can we have that chicken recipe please?

Everything is Illuminated was one of those strangely pointless movies. I can't comment on the other one. I find foreign films more intriguing less predictable

i didn't like the book of Everything is Illuminated as much as i thought i would, so i've held off on the movie. as for 2046, i thought it looked lovely, but it was more than a bit slow.

Well at least you now created a new recipe! Never heard of these films before.

Did you hear about the 28-year old guy who was struck and killed by lightning in Christie park? I guess standing under a tree wasn't such a great idea after all.

The missing "p" is in mopped...

I'm sure Trouble sends his best -- I was not intending to insult you with my self-portrait comment. Please see my follow-up comment (on his site) for clarification!

Hope ur sleeping better without the snoring!

Sigh...I really need to widen my movie viewing repertoire again, as I have now decided to boycott those that make me weepy and mopey.

bad weather + weepy movies = nuff bawling.

Terrible formula, that.

Ahh Mopped! I need an editor....

"Everything is Illuminated" was an okay movie. I'd say the book was better, but I hate when people always say that about books that are turned into movies.

Thats kind of like this English guy at my office who told me he made a chicken curry soup. :)

Never heard of those movies.

My visitors have left too. In my case, I am moping a bit because they took my son with them! :(
